B Avenue NW Pavement Reconstruction

City of Cedar Rapids

Problem

As a part of the 1% sales tax that was designated for streets, the City of Cedar Rapids designated a portion of B Avenue, 3000 feet in length, to be reconstructed. This reconstruction include removal of the old street and new paving installed, along with new water main and storm sewer.

Solution

Brain Engineering was retained to provide the civil engineering design—and every bit of our expertise was needed. Since the original intent was to overlay the street with asphaltic concrete, borings done indicated that the concrete had been pulverized into gravel and no foundation existed for the overlay. In addition, an 8’ x 12’ concrete box culvert runs down the centerline of the entire project. This required special consideration when tying the storm sewer pipe into the box culvert to correct drainage issues on the street.

Special consideration was also taken when connecting the side streets to allow for positive drainage off of the new roadway. By gathering this knowledge, we’re converting a series of complex needs into streamlined solutions.

Finished Project

This project will be started in the Spring of 2016 to begin laying the water main and storm sewer. The project will be complete in the summer of 2016.
